Stewart Island Southern Brown Kiwi (New Zealand)

Kiwis, the national birds of New Zealand, are neither equipped for flight nor fight, making them easy prey for mammalian predators. This individual was photographed foraging on the beach at night on Stewart Island in New Zealand. It was illuminated indirectly with a flash light , and photographed with the MAGICVU / 0 LUX capability of a Panasonic Mini DV Palmcorder that renders images in black and white. It is easier to make out when it is moving than in the still frame at the left. This bird was having a meal of tiny crustaceans, the Kiwi equivalent of all-you-can-eat shrimp. They were crawling all over the beach and burrowing into the sand. One is shown crawling on our guide's hand at the end of the video.
